Description

The Milà handle, also known as Bolardo, is an iconic piece of design conceived by Antoni Gaudí for Casa Milà (La Pedrera) around 1910. This small functional sculpture, originally made of polished brass, perfectly exemplifies the fusion of art, ergonomics and architecture that characterises the work of the modernist architect.
With its soft, curved and seemingly organic shapes, this handle fits naturally in the user’s hand, demonstrating Gaudí’s attention to functionality integrated into design. Far from adopting conventional shapes, the handle has a biomorphic silhouette reminiscent of a piece sculpted by wind or water, evoking the dynamism of nature at rest.
The Milà handle not only acts as a practical element, but also becomes a sculptural detail within the architectural ensemble of La Pedrera, reinforcing the idea that every component, no matter how small, must be part of a formal, coherent and living language. Its polished and shiny surface reflects the light in changing ways, bringing the metal material to life.
Today, the Milà handle is faithfully reproduced using traditional craftsmanship that respects the shapes, proportions and materials of the original design. This piece has become a benchmark of modern design and a tangible testament to Gaudí’s genius in everyday details.
