Hydraulic mosaic

Gaudí’s footprint in modernist design

Hydraulic mosaic is one of the most characteristic decorative materials of 19th- and early 20th-century architecture. It was mainly used for interior floors, creating carpet-like compositions by interlocking various pieces. For exteriors, the equivalent was paving slabs, widely used on the streets of Barcelona and now a true symbol of the city. Hydraulic mosaic tiles were introduced in Catalonia around 1860 and quickly became fashionable.

With the arrival of Catalan Modernisme, Modernista hydraulic mosaics underwent a significant artistic development. This movement embraced them for their versatility and the possibility of creating unique designs. Today, we can still admire these floors in iconic buildings such as Park Güell, the Palau de la Música Catalana, Casa Lleó i Morera and Gaudí’s La Pedrera.

Modernist hydraulic mosaics offered artists complete freedom. Thanks to this, designers such as Alexandre de Riquer and Modernist architects like Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Antoni Gaudí were able to showcase their full talent and creativity in every floor.
