Description

The Calvet peephole, created by Antoni Gaudí around 1902 for the Casa Calvet in Barcelona, is a piece that transforms a discreet and functional element into an object of art. Made of precision-worked brass, this peephole reflects Gaudí’s ability to give meaning, beauty and expressiveness to even the smallest details of the domestic environment.

Far from presenting a flat or purely technical structure, the peephole adopts an organic, undulating, almost sculptural form. Its soft, curved edges evoke natural elements, such as a rolled-up leaf or a resting eye, creating a discreet but profoundly aesthetic presence in the doorway where it is installed.

In addition to fulfilling its surveillance function, the Calvet peephole acts as a symbolic link between the interior and exterior of the home, between the intimate space and the world outside. Gaudí understood that every point of contact between architecture and its inhabitants should be carefully designed to inspire, protect and excite.

Today, this piece is faithfully reproduced following traditional craft methods, respecting the proportions, finishes and materials of the original design. The Calvet peephole is further proof of Gaudí’s genius: no object is too small to be beautiful, meaningful and deeply human.
